Most of us have, will or are currently facing food battles with our toddlers. It is inevitable, kids go through their phases. Be it a picky eater exerting his/her power, or a selective eater with severe food aversions, one thing most of these kids have in common is their love of sweets. That sweet tooth may be our ticket to getting the good stuff into their tiny bodies.
My daughter is a chocolate lover (like her mama), so I’ve had to scour the web for super sneaky ideas involving chocolate and hidden veggies. I have tested a few of the recipes below on Ladybug and they were a hit! Maybe some of these will work successfully on your little one too.
Black Bean Chocolate Cookies – A great way to get the fiber in.These cookies are pretty easy to make and have a very fudge-like texture, almost like a brownie. The cocoa powder, peanut butter and sugar help mask the beans. I’d make them more often if it weren’t for all of the added sugars. But when kiddos are constipated, feed them a few of these sweet treats and they’ll be back on track.
Yogurt Nut Butter Dip – Lauren shared this yummy dip recipe with us a while back, and it is divine! The dip contains any nut butter of choice and Greek yogurt which are both packed with goodness for the kids. Now add the fruits (or maybe a veggie such as celery) and you’ve got a sweet and healthy snack.
Zucchini Carrot Muffins – These muffins are simple and yummy with hidden veggies to boot. They are also great for an on-the-go breakfast. Follow this recipe as is or substitute where needed. I personally grate the veggies so they aren’t as visible. I also like to add diced or grated apple and sometimes walnuts. Make a big batch and freeze extras. They are that good.
As you experiment with these sweet recipes, you may have to substitute one ingredient at a time to get the approval of your child. Also, try substituting applesauce for sugar, whole wheat flour for standard flour, coconut oil for vegetable oil, and so on. So many simple changes can make big differences in our health.
